Yemen is facing a food security crisis
Thousands of Yemenis are set to face extreme hunger within months due to wheat shortages resulting from the conflict in Ukraine.
The world's worst humanitarian crisis
Even before the impact of the conflict in Ukraine, Yemen was teetering on the brink of disaster. With over half the population food insecure and over 20 million people in need of humanitarian aid, the country is facing a dire situation.
As a country that depends on imports for the vast majority of its food, Yemen is extremely vulnerable to external shocks. Despite the best efforts of the humanitarian community, volatile global markets and supply chain disruptions are fast pushing Yemen to a point of no return.
Communities are facing catastrophe
Due to the conflict in Ukraine, Yemen is running out of wheat supplies, plunging its food system deeper into crisis.
Shockwaves in global food markets are preventing sufficient wheat supplies from entering the country, starving citizens of a staple food and impacting essential humanitarian programmes on the ground.
Yemen is facing unprecedented supply and food affordability challenges, bringing communities across the country face to face with catastrophe.
Yemen's situation is about to get worse
Wheat supply disruptions are compounding the effects of Yemen's already grave food security crisis.
The threat of extreme hunger in Yemen has increased rapidly in 2022, with communities across the country already at a risk of famine.
According to recent IPC data that was published before wheat supply disruptions started to take hold, 17.4 million people are food insecure, with that number due to increase to 19 million by as early as next month.
HSA Group calls for international action
Without an urgent global intervention, the private sector will not be able to provide the Yemeni people with the food they need.
HSA Group is therefore calling for the international community to come together to put in place innovative, sustainable and above all workable solutions to help get food into Yemen.
Only by doing this will we avert the humanitarian catastrophe that awaits Yemen and its people.
Action through the power of partnership
HSA Group stands ready to work hand-in-hand with our international and regional partners to tackle Yemen's food security crisis.
